On Sunday, July 6th, 2025, I had the privilege of being hosted to a warm and memorable dinner by my dear friend and brother, Prof. Hon. Steve Azaiki, OON, at the Cubana Restaurant and Bar near Waterloo Station in London. Prof. Azaiki is not only a towering intellectual and seasoned public servant but also one of the most distinguished political figures of our time. Since our first encounter in 2014—when he graciously accepted the role of book reviewer at my first book launch in Nigeria—he has remained an unwavering source of inspiration, motivation, and mentorship throughout my journey in international development and global affairs. Our meeting in London was more than a social gathering; it was a reflection of genuine friendship and enduring respect. In our brief but impactful time together, we shared thoughts on Nigeria—its politics, people, power dynamics, and promise. We also discussed the upcoming 10th Anniversary of the London Political Summit and Awards this October, where Prof. Azaiki proudly serves as a member of the Advisory Board.

Who is Prof. Steve Azaiki, OON? He is a prodigious scholar, holding dual doctoral degrees and numerous postgraduate qualifications. A seasoned administrator and policymaker, he has made impactful contributions in agriculture, education, and national development. As a federal lawmaker, Prof. Azaiki represented Yenagoa/Kolokuma‑Opokuma Federal Constituency in the 9th House of Representatives (2019–2023), where he championed legislation, implemented impactful constituency projects, and served on global platforms such as the World Bank/IMF Parliamentary Network and GOPAC. A transformative philanthropist, he is the founder of the Azaiki Public Library (est. 2015)—the largest privately owned library in West Africa. Beyond that, he established a museum, science and skills centers, a primary school, and a church in Yenagoa, all aimed at empowering his people through access to knowledge, culture, and capacity building.

A Life of Service Prof. Azaiki began his career as a humble teacher before joining the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), where he retired as State Director (Grade Level 17), having served in both Rivers and Oyo States. His dedication to public service in Bayelsa State is unmatched—serving in 16 key positions, including: • Pioneer Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources under Group Captain Olu Gbolade’s military administration • Two-time Secretary to the State Government • Special Adviser on various portfolios • Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council at Niger Delta University As a federal representative, he brought light—literally and figuratively—to his constituency, delivering solar-powered street lighting, health centre generators, youth empowerment programs, and critical COVID-19 support.

Following his impactful tenure in the National Assembly, Prof. Azaiki made a personal decision to step away from elective politics after one term—demonstrating his selflessness and deep commitment to service rather than ambition. My Professor. My Honourable. My Teacher. My Mentor. My Brother. Prof. Steve Azaiki is more than a man—he is an institution, an embodiment of knowledge, freedom, and humility. I salute you, Great Man. May your legacy continue to shine as a beacon of wisdom, service, and inspiration.
