A Memorable Celebration of Charlie Boy in London
It was a great honour and privilege to attend the London launch of 999: The Memoir of Charlie Boy and the inauguration of the Charlie Boy Foundation at the prestigious Grand Empire, London, where I was invited as a Special Guest.
The occasion brought together an impressive gathering of distinguished personalities from Nigeria and the diaspora, including political leaders, business executives, entertainment icons, community leaders and cultural influencers, to celebrate the extraordinary life, experiences, public influence and enduring legacy of Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charlie Boy, the legendary ‘Area Father’ and ‘Baba ni yen’.
The event was particularly memorable for the presence of His Excellency, Chief Dr. Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo, GCFR, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who served as Special Guest of Honour, Chief Discussant and a central personality in the evening’s reflections.
The Chief Launcher of the book was Dr. Chidi Anyaegbu, MFR, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Chisco Group, who attended with his daughters, including Dr. Chiamaka Anyaegbu, the Group’s Chief Operating Officer.
Adding further glamour and international entertainment to the occasion was Dr. Alban, the internationally recognised musician and Charlie Boy’s colleague in the entertainment industry, who flew into London specially to demonstrate his friendship and support.
Among the distinguished personalities and notable Nigerian community leaders in attendance were Sir Chibuzo Ubochi, Esq.; Chief Alex Achiebe; Dr. Ubani; Dr. Alistair Soyode; Otunba Fadipe; Chief Malcolm Benson; Chief Eric Nwadinobi; Adabuzo NdiAbia; Dee Lionesses; Lady Nikky Emenike; Kenny G; Priscilla Nwikpo of Ben TV London; Lady Doyni; DJ Abass; Industry Baba; and several other prominent figures from the Nigerian and wider African community.

Beyond the glamour and social significance of the gathering, the event provided an opportunity to celebrate a remarkable personality whose unconventional lifestyle, artistic expression, activism and public commentary have made him one of Nigeria’s most recognisable cultural figures.
President Obasanjo and Charlie Boy: A Conversation Beyond Public Perception
One of the most captivating highlights of the evening was the engaging and unusually personal exchange between former President Obasanjo and Charlie Boy.
Their conversation went far beyond the conventional formalities of a book launch. It offered guests a rare glimpse into their personal histories, lifestyles, influences, personalities, family connections and longstanding relationship.

The interaction was particularly fascinating because it brought together two highly individualistic Nigerian personalities whose public identities, experiences and contributions have attracted considerable attention and discussion over the years.
During the conversation, Chief Obasanjo reflected on his longstanding affection for Charlie Boy, acknowledging that, irrespective of his unconventional lifestyle, public appearances, music, character and distinctive personality, he had always had a natural fondness for him.
He challenged the tendency to judge Charlie Boy solely by his appearance, music or public image, observing that anyone who formed an opinion of him based exclusively on these outward expressions would fail to appreciate the person behind the persona.

In his reflections, Obasanjo recognised Charlie Boy as an intelligent, talented and respectable activist whose character and contributions extend well beyond his often unconventional public presentation.
His observations were particularly significant in the context of the memoir, as they encouraged guests to look beyond the public spectacle and consider the personal experiences, intellectual qualities and convictions that have shaped Charlie Boy’s identity.
It was a powerful reminder that public personalities are often far more complex than the images through which they are popularly understood.
The Oputa Family Connection: A Relationship Built on History and Loyalty
Another deeply touching moment came through the contribution of Charlie Boy’s younger brother, Mr. George Oputa, Esq., who delivered the opening prayer and subsequently shared personal reflections on the relationship between the former President and the Oputa family.
George recalled the important role Chief Obasanjo played in the family’s history, particularly his appointment of their late father, the distinguished jurist Chief Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, as Chairman of the Human Rights Violations Investigation Commission, widely known as the Oputa Panel.
He also spoke warmly about Obasanjo’s attendance at the funerals of both their parents and his continued support for the Oputa family, particularly his brother, Charlie Boy.
These recollections added a profoundly human dimension to the evening, demonstrating that beyond political office, public recognition and celebrity, enduring relationships are often sustained by friendship, shared experiences, family loyalty and personal acts of kindness.
The reflections also highlighted the importance of recognising and appreciating those who stand by families and individuals through different stages of life, including moments of bereavement and personal difficulty.
The relationship described by George was an important part of the evening’s narrative, connecting the story of Charlie Boy’s personal life to the wider history of his family and its relationship with one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures.

Charlie Boy’s Reflections: Family, Women, Children and the Obasanjo Influence
In his response, Charlie Boy also reflected on the similarities he perceived between himself and Chief Obasanjo, particularly in relation to women, children and family life.
With his characteristic candour and humour, Charlie Boy suggested that in these aspects of life, he continued to follow in the footsteps of the former President, affectionately acknowledging Obasanjo’s influence and leadership.
The exchange brought a lighter and entertaining dimension to an otherwise reflective occasion, allowing guests to appreciate the personal chemistry, mutual familiarity and relaxed rapport between the two men.
Their conversation demonstrated how friendship and mutual respect can transcend differences in personality, public presentation and professional experience.
It was this combination of humour, sincerity, personal recollection and mutual appreciation that made their exchange one of the evening’s most memorable features.

The Official Unveiling of 999: The Memoir of Charlie Boy
A major highlight of the evening was the official unveiling of 999: The Memoir of Charlie Boy, performed by His Excellency, Chief Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, former President of Nigeria.
The former President was supported at the unveiling by the Chief Launcher, Dr. Chidi Anyaegbu, MFR, Chairman of Chisco Group; the author and celebrant, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charlie Boy; and his younger brother, Mr. George Oputa, Esq.
The symbolic unveiling brought together four important personalities whose presence reflected the political, business and personal relationships that gave the occasion its distinctive character.
It was a fitting moment of recognition for Charlie Boy, marking the culmination of an evening dedicated to celebrating his life, experiences, achievements and contributions to Nigerian entertainment, culture and public life.
The unveiling also represented the transition from the celebration of Charlie Boy’s public persona to a more personal engagement with his life story, as presented through his memoir.
Dr. Chidi Anyaegbu Leads the Book Launch with a £2,000 Contribution
Following the official unveiling, the formal book launch commenced with brief remarks by the Chief Launcher, Dr. Chidi Anyaegbu, MFR, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Chisco Group.
In demonstrating his support for Charlie Boy and the significance of the occasion, Dr. Anyaegbu opened the fundraising contributions with a generous donation of £2,000 towards the book launch.
His contribution was followed by donations from other distinguished guests and supporters, including:
- Dr. Chiamaka Anyaegbu, Chief Operating Officer of Chisco Group — £200
- Chief Alex Achiebe — £200
- Mazi Godson Azu — £100
Several other guests and well-wishers also made contributions in support of the launch and the celebratory initiative.
The generosity demonstrated by the Chief Launcher, corporate representatives, community leaders and other attendees added a practical expression of solidarity to the evening’s celebrations.
Beyond the symbolic significance of unveiling the memoir, the contributions reflected the value of supporting Nigerian authors, preserving personal and national stories, and encouraging initiatives that can extend an individual’s influence into wider society.
The successful launch therefore combined literary celebration with friendship, recognition, philanthropy and collective support for Charlie Boy’s next chapter through his memoir and Foundation.
Charlie Boy: More Than an Entertainer
The launch of 999: The Memoir of Charlie Boy was more than the unveiling of a book. It was an opportunity to reflect on the life and experiences of a Nigerian cultural icon whose identity has consistently challenged conventional expectations.
Charlie Boy has established a distinctive place in Nigeria’s entertainment, cultural and public life through his music, activism, public commentary, unconventional fashion and willingness to question prevailing social attitudes.
His career and public persona have generated conversations about individuality, freedom of expression, generational differences, social expectations and the relationship between celebrity and activism.
For decades, Charlie Boy has maintained an identity that distinguishes him from conventional entertainment personalities. His artistic expression, distinctive presentation and public interventions have made him a recognisable figure in discussions about Nigerian popular culture and society.
However, the evening’s reflections, particularly those shared by Chief Obasanjo and George Oputa, reinforced the importance of looking beyond the familiar public image to appreciate the personal relationships, family experiences, intelligence, convictions and influences that form part of his story.
The memoir provides an occasion to revisit these dimensions of his life and consider the experiences, relationships and personal convictions that have helped shape the man behind the ‘Area Father’ identity.

The simultaneous launch of the Charlie Boy Foundation added another important dimension to the occasion.
While the memoir offers an opportunity to document and preserve the author’s personal experiences and reflections, the Foundation represents an opportunity to translate his public influence into a structured platform for social engagement and lasting impact.
The establishment of the Foundation is particularly significant because public figures can use their visibility, experience and networks to support causes and initiatives that extend beyond their immediate professional achievements.
Its future work will be an important part of how this new chapter of Charlie Boy’s legacy develops, including the causes it chooses to support, the communities it serves and the measurable impact of its programmes.
The launch therefore provided a platform not only to celebrate Charlie Boy’s past but also to recognise the possibilities associated with his future contributions.
A Celebration of Nigerian Excellence and Diaspora Connections
As a Nigerian in the diaspora and an advocate of leadership, good governance, cultural identity and international engagement, I found the occasion particularly significant.
Events of this nature demonstrate the continuing importance of London as a meeting point for Nigerian intellectual, political, cultural, business and entertainment communities.
They also provide opportunities for influential Nigerians across different generations and professional backgrounds to reconnect, exchange ideas, celebrate personal achievements and strengthen relationships across the diaspora.
The presence of a former Nigerian President, an internationally recognised entertainer, prominent business leaders and distinguished community personalities at the same gathering illustrated the breadth of Charlie Boy’s relationships and the cultural reach of his personality.
More importantly, the occasion offered a reminder that Nigeria’s national story is shaped not only by political institutions and public officeholders but also by artists, activists, entrepreneurs, writers, cultural figures and citizens who influence society in their own distinctive ways.
The gathering also illustrated the importance of diaspora platforms in preserving Nigerian cultural identity, celebrating achievement, facilitating networking and strengthening the connections between Nigerians at home and abroad.
The participation of people from different professional, cultural and social backgrounds was a testament to the unifying potential of events that celebrate shared heritage and individual accomplishment.
