Hundreds of Ijaw youths council (IYC) members have shut down the Bayelsa office of NNDC and blocked the Mbiama-axis of the East-West Road following the failure of the Federal Government to inaugurate a substantive board for the NDDC.
The protesters impeded traffic along the busy causing gridlock and apprehension in the area.
The group had given Nigerian government 30 days to constitute the board or risk total shutdown of the Niger Delta region.
The ultimatum expired on Tuesday, May 25th.
Meanwhile, there have been reports that the IYC President, Peter Igbifa, was taken to an unknown destination by some masked gunmen on Tuesday while on his way to the International Airport in Port Harcourt.
While it was initially thought that the assailants were kidnappers, fresh information suggests they might be government security agents trying to prevent the shutdown of the area.
