Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe

Dear Senator Abaribe,

COMMENDATION ON YOUR SENATE VOTE ON ELECTORAL ACT AMMENDMENT BILL

1.We the members of Abia League of Professional Initiatives (ALPI) , wish to commend you for standing up to be counted, when it mattered most, by voting YES, during the voting session on the Use of Electronic Transmission of Election Results.
Despite the attempt by some vested interests in the Senate who would rather shun the adoption of a more accountable and credible use of technology in our modern world in conducting elections in Nigeria. It is clear to all discerning Nigerians and the world at large, that those Senators who rejected the use of technology in the conduct of elections in the country have ulterior motives aimed at subverting the will of the people and make a mockery of the national electoral process. We however take solace in the fact that you and your other colleagues in the Senate, spoke up and reflected the true yearnings of the people of Abia State and Nigerians in general.

2.It is obvious that the unconstitutional provisions in the amendment of the Electoral Act, is the first step in a grand plan at compromising the 2023 elections. We urge you and your other well meaning colleagues not to relent in mobilizing opposition to defeat this ill-Intentioned interference, in what is ordinarily within the purview of the INDEPENDENT National Electoral Commission (INEC).

3.The hallmark of democracy and why it is government of “the people, by the people” is effective representation in the legislature, where elected representatives take on the responsibility of canvassing the needs and aspirations of their constituents through debates and votes.
Developments in Nigeria’s political firmament in the past few years have seen a progressive erosion of the will of the people and a leaning towards autocratic governance.

4.Ominously, the assault on the Nigerian constitution and the brazen impunity demonstrated by the political class would not augur well for Nigeria’s fledging democracy.
This dangerous trend places huge responsibilities on the National Assembly, especially the Senate, in curtailing the excesses of the executive arm of the Federal Government. The implication is that national politics in Nigeria is no longer business as usual because these anti-democratic tendencies must be robustly resisted in line with the principles of separation of power.
It should be a given that the South East Zone, which has borne the brunt of the discriminatory and undemocratic actions of the Federal Government, should be at the forefront in defending key
democratic institutions and accepted norms of democracy against the onslaught of the executive arm of government.

5.The Southern Governors Forum has shown leadership in this regard and actually spelt out the right decisions every patriotic legislator should take, including how they should vote on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. Unfortunately, some Senators, decided to swim against the tide, for reasons best known to them.We shall be engaging with you and other national politicians and Abia stakeholders, of good will in the coming weeks and months to address this and other challenges that confront the people, particularly your constituents and Abia State in general.

Thank you and God bless you.

Yours Sincerely,
Abia League of Professional Initiatives
